Wolff to speak at SJ Chamber event 2/11

It's not on the calendar yet, but I have confirmed that Lew Wolff will speak at a San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce event in February. The specifics:
A's and Earthquakes: Plans for 2009?
with Lew Wolff
Wednesday, February 11, 7:30-9:30 AM
@ Adobe Systems
Park Conference Room
345 Park Ave., San Jose

Online registration will be available shortly, and will be open until February 6.

Speculate away.

Not sure what Wolff speaking at the SJ Chamber of Commerce has to do with the previous post. Wolff has spoken at events like this many times in the past.

The question about the SJ Muni Code will eventually come up in future discussions and I want it to be readily available for those who ask. Inevitably, it will also come up in Wolff's talks as well - maybe not this one, but soon.

I hope Q & A session will provide more information than the title of the event.
"A's and Earthquakes: Plans for 2009?
with Lew Wolff"

Plans for 09? I guess we'll see what happens.

ML - are you planning on attending? if so can you bring a video camera or digital recorder? :)

NOOOO, NOT AGAIN!! J.K. I just remember the last time he spoke to the Chamber at Adobe...the infamous death of pursuing a ballpark in San Jose back in 06. Will things be different this time? I can only hope, but I'm not going to expect anything great (in terms of anything new) coming out of this event. Don't want to set myself up for personal disaster...but who knows.

I will attend. No camera though, I have to focus on taking notes.

Wonder if it will actually be focusing more on the Earthquakes with the A's still publicly pursuing Fremont. The Earthquakes stadium should be getting close to an official announcement any time in the next few months.

ML,

Given what you have said about the process continuing in Fremont, I'm not expecting much from Wolff regarding SJ. At most I expect him to say that they are still trying to make Fremont (PC or WS) happen, and if that doesn't work out, they will look elsewhere.

I don't know, seems to me if the A's were going to turn their attention away from Fremont, they would announce it in a PR not a COC speech.

My stance since December remains: San Jose will not be explored until all avenues in Fremont completely run their course and fail in the process. Still, I'm hoping for a tasty soundbite or two.

There was an anonymous comment last week predicting this event.

Need to talk to Earthquakes fans more often ML. They've been talking about this event for over a week now. ;)

any of you guys know why the A's have started to look at other avenues for a new ballpark? Didn't the A's just submit the EIR back in November?

after the EIR is approved - what's next?

thanks

Sorry Dan, had to sit on it a couple of days and check with the Chamber first. When I called to verify their response was, "How did you find out?"

The EIR has been underway since December 2007. The draft EIR will be published, followed by a public review period with comments. A decision to certify will be made after the final EIR is completed. Only after certification can the project proceed. The addition of Warm Springs complicates things and requires a supplement that has WS specifics.

By the way R.M., how is MLS doing in this economy? With the Arena Football League cancelling its season because of the economic meltdown, I'm surprised we haven't heard anything regarding MLS; ie possible cancellation of its season, contraction of franchises, bankruptcy's, etc. As for the Earthquakes and the 2/11 event: They already exist playing at SCU, have a solid fanbase, have plans for a SSS (albeit smaller with less luxury items)...what more needs to be said regarding said soccer team? Again, not expecting any Earth-shattering news regarding the A's and San Jose, but based on the news of last month, who knows. By the way, in my email, I meant "Nora Campos," not "Laura."

Wolff says Santa Clara County door is officially opened....Will he purposefully sabotage Fremont to get to San Jose now?

MLS actually appears to be pretty well situated in this economy. According to the Quakes at least their sponsorship sales have been good and season ticket sales have been on par with last year. Which makes sense, as they're a fairly cheap ticket, operation and sponsorship compared to football, even Arena football. Also being a single entity league has likely been helping their bottom line. And rather than contraction they're actually poised to continue expansion with Seattle and Philly entering in 2009 and 2010 with 2 more teams after that. In fact the AFL is considering coming back under a model similar to MLS if reports are to be believed.

I don't think that Wolff has to purposefully sabatoge Fremont to get to San Jose----Catellus and Fremont residents are doing a good job of it themselves---

Expect San Jose to be in play well before June---in fact----I'd say before the first pitch is thrown out for the 2009 season
