I've said it before and I'll say it again: I truly hope most of these people who say they are dumping the team (people who include the despicable people who did this) will follow through. The quality of our fanbase will improve immediately if they are no longer counted amoung us.

I think Peter Magowan and Larry Baer are the culprits! Seriously though, this act is pretty low and I agree totally with Anon 12:58. If you don't like the idea of the A's moving to Fremont, cease calling yourself an A's fan and don't go to the games!

"If you don't like the idea of the A's moving to Fremont, cease calling yourself an A's fan and don't go to the games!"

So it isn't acceptable for an A's fan to want the team to stay in Oakland? Is it not okay for an A's fan to question the decisions of a new owner? Would you like us to celebrate the kind of fan who is indifferent to team's tradition of champions in Oakland?

On the other hand, people do identify with the A's as an Oakland institution - and the city has built its pride and identity around its professional sports teams. Relations between fans and a team are a two-way street. When a fan pours his/her heart and soul into the team only to see them go courting a younger and richer town, I can understand why they might be upset. Sure, vandalizing the sign isn't the way to express the sentiment, but there's some grief we're working through, and everyone's got to allow for that process to happen.

How in the world did they get to the sign since AC Transit doesn't run by ?

My apologies Jeeves: my commentary was directed toward who ever vandalized the Pacific Commons sign, not A's fans who legitimately (and lawfully) question the decisions of Lew Wolff. Peace, Anon 2:45.

Have you guys ever thought it could be a Fremont resident who doesn't want all the added noise, pollution, and traffic of a new ballpark and development of houses.

In my view, the A's have been far more loyal to Oakland over the years then Oakland has ever been to the A's. Not only do they not show up to games (almost everyone I talk to at the games are from outside of Oakland) but the city doesn't care about the A's as well. They CHOSE the Raiders over the A's. Period. Now they must live with that decision.

why all the hostility towards Fremont? It's not like Oakland officials are doing anything to keep them. Look at SF. Newsome is even threatening lawsuits. Nevermind that they won't hold any water; at least he's trying. Where's Ron Dellums? Ignacio de la Fuente? Dan Johnson?

I just want to know why South Bay Fans are better than Oakland fans? Is this documented that they show up in greater numbers at A's games? Are they more passionate than Oakland Fans?

Anonymous said...

Think Irvine Spectrum, not Santana Row for the future Village retail/entertainment ;)

Anonymous said...

I think its more that while we don't know if South Bay fans will show up or not, we already know that Oakland fans won't, and I think the A's will take the unknown over the certain, when the certain is very low.

I don't know what message this frustrated Oaklander intended, but the one s/he is sending is that Oaklanders resort to vandalism if they don't get their way. My guess is that Wolfe is thanking god he is moving farther away from people like this.

And someone from Fremont doing this? That's a good one.

Anon 5:30,
Yes, most people who go to A's games come from outside of Oakland. A's fans are from all over Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, which is an area comprising 2,465,692 people. Oakland only has 398,844 people. All fans being equal, Oakland should only be supplying 16% of gate. If there are fans from the South Bay, Oakland's proportion is even smaller.

But this is about pride. I'm not from inside Oakland city limits either, but when I travel I say I am. The reason why people know of Oakland is its professional sports teams. There's a whole lot of 400,000 person cities that no one really pays any attention to - for Oakland, what is at risk is becoming another one of those.

I too wish Oakland city government would do more to keep the team. But you have to recognize the political context which exists because of the Mt. Davis debacle. Oakland might be the toughest city in American in which to get a stadium done. But please don't hate on Oakland's A's fans for that - as far as I'm concerned, we're the victims.

South bay fans aren't saying we're better than others, but we're sure as hell happy that our commute-hour drive time to the ballpark will drop from the normal hour and a half to about 30 minutes!

Why not a Fremonter?! Why must it be an Oaklander. Do you really think someone from Oakland would drive all the way out to Fremont to commit vandalism? What Bogus ignorance. It might have been a Fremonter who doesn't want the A's in town or for that matter why couldn't be a person from San Jose wanting the team downtown? I'm from Oakland and we're not a bunch of vandals, drug users, or murderers. So keep you're stupid steriotyping to yourself.

I visited the oaklandfans site and on the home page in the "Ads by Google" box they have link to the "Cisco's New Stadium Plan" ... "Cisco announces new ballpark with high tech amenities in Fremont" . Talk about irony.

Seems like an honorable cause but alas as Jerry Brown said "Fremont has the land, we don't". It seems to me that it's either Fremont or out of state.

OK, so you can't read. That sends another great message about Oaklanders. Where did I say everyone from Oakland is a vandal? Nowhere. I said it sends that message. If you don't understand the difference, be angry at your education-providers not me. And yes, I know it was a pissed-off Oaklander. Plenty of your bretheren have shown that this is exactly the kind of childish stunt they would pull-off.

Why would anyone in Fremont be upset that an owner announced the intention to increase their tax base and bring sorely needed entertainment options to their town without negatively affecting their general fund? Has a formal proposal been submitted? No. Has an economic or environmental impact study been done that shows negative impacts to Fremont? No. There is simply no reason for anyone in Fremont to react with any hostility at this time. Plus, if you knew anything about Fremont politics or its citizenry, you'd know that your assertion, beyond the total illogic of it, is completely laughable.

Look, I'm really sorry that so many of you feel emasculated by this move. But you should really examine why your self-worth is so tied up in seeing your city's name in the AL standings everyday instead of hating on Fremont and Wolfe.

Ever thought that this could be an enviornmentalist? Because of the wetlands and problems that it will cause in terms of pollution and traffic along with the wetlands. All I'm saying is, there are many reason too.

I did it. I love mayhem.

With the lack of parking at the site and the lack of mass transit, you're going to be LUCKY if your commute to Cisco is only an hour and a half.

Actually, statistics say otherwise. Oakland is the 5th most dangerous city in the USA.

Of course, that doesn't mean everyone in Oakland is a vandal or drug user, but it sure as heck means a lot are.

You get to keep the A's in the bay. Some of us would settle for having the team within a six-hour drive of us.

I honestly feel bad for Marine Layer. As recently as a couple months ago, most posts were by people willing to identify themselves and the banter was, at the very least, not of the personal nature. But I guess it speaks to the increased popularity of the site, which isn't so bad. Anyway, hope this hasn't changed Marine Layer's desire to continue this insightful site.

I'll bet it was a Fremont citizen worried about the immense tax dollars bound to go to this money pit and worried about the immense traffic jams since there will be no public transportation.

The Merc wrote a blurb on this act yesterday:

ML, why do you perpetuate this?

As many have said, the person(s) who did this could have come from ANYWHERE and to speculate the source just brings back all the city bashing stuff that you've gone out of your way to admonish and driven posters away in doing so.

Yet look at these comments! Doesn't look like a whole lot of "moderation" is going on here.

Jeff, you caught me. I originally wasn't going to post the picture, but I wanted to prove a point.

The two previous posts were analysis and detail-filled, and I wanted to see if people would actually start discussing the merits of the deal. Judging from the comments, there was little to no interest.

On the other hand, I simply posted a picture, no commentary or caption alongside it, and it brings out the worst, most base reactions. While it wasn't as rancorous as some other comment threads, it was pretty close. And to that, I can only shake my head in disgust. Is that all you anonymous attackers have? If it is, don't bother reading this site, because it's obvious you don't want to be informed, and it's also clear you see no nuance in the situation.

For the majority of you that are clearheaded, that understand nuance and compromise, that come without an axe to grind, thank you for your support.

iM TONE and Im from Oakland (east oakland matter of fact) and I hate people thinking they are better than us. Im realistic, we need a new stadium and Fremont has the land. But what is wrong with keeping our name Oakland A's of Fremont?? I mean we will have a new stadium with more fans in the southbay attending and keep our tradition and history in Oakland. Hell its still in Alameda County. Its a suggestion nobody is talking about
